The stone surgery has evolved a long way from the era of open stone surgery to the most advanced form of stone surgery i.e. Holmium Laser Lithotripsy/ Holmium Laser stone surgery. Holmium laser stone surgery uses holmium laser to break stones that are present in urinary tract of a person. These stones are generally located in kidneys, ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), bladder or urethra (the tube through which urine leaves the body from the bladder) of the person. The surgery is done with the help of a flexible laser fibre which is used through the scope (camera) placed in the urinary tract through the urethra of the patient. The stone is broken into small fragments often in the size of dust particles; which generally passes through urine. The procedure is done without any incisions or cuts.
The other methods available for breaking stones are pneumatic/ ballistic lithotripsy and ESWL or extracorporeal lithotripsy. Both of these methods are often falsely promoted as laser stone surgery.
Drawbacks of Pneumatic/ ballistic lithotripsy
