Assisted Reproductive Techniques

Assisted reproductive techniques, more commonly known as ART are a set of different methods with which person can have a child without the intercourse. Depending upon the case history and medical condition of patient, the choice of ART is exclusive for every case. IVF is one of the most common and highly successful ART procedure, however there are some other popular and effective ART methods too.

Let us discuss about them one by one:

1. Intrauterine Insemination:

Under this method, the sperm is first collected, washed and then placed into the uterus of female. This procedure involves critical observation of ovulation cycle in order to determine most appropriate time for placement of sperm to fertilize the eggs. This method is essentially used when:

  • A person has low sperm count
  • Sperm mobility issue.
  • Retrograde ejaculation
  • Other infertility reasons.

2. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI):

In this procedure, with the help of a needle the sperm is directly injected into the egg and kept under culture medium until it is fertilized. Once the egg fertilizes successfully it is placed into the uterus for remaining duration of pregnancy. This method helps dealing with:

  • Low quality sperm
  • Azoospermia
  • Testicular failure
  • Veins blockage, etc.
